Leaving your pet behind when you travel can be stressful. In the UAE, where the pet care industry is booming, you have everything from basic kennels to ultra-luxury "pet hotels." But how do you separate marketing fluff from a facility that will truly keep your pet safe and happy?
Use this checklist to ensure your pet gets a five-star stay.
1. Licensing and Legal Compliance
Before looking at the amenities, check the paperwork. In the UAE, legal standards are strictly enforced.
- Trade License: Ensure the facility is officially licensed for "Pet Grooming." Note that "home grooming" in private villas is often illegal without a commercial license.
- Mandatory Registration (2026): As of February 3, 2026, all cats and dogs in Sharjah must be registered via the TAMM platform. Ensure the facility checks for microchipping and up-to-date vaccinations to avoid the Dh1,000 fine.
- Insurance: A reputable facility should have liability insurance to cover accidents or medical emergencies.
2. Climate Control & Indoor Facilities
In a country where temperatures frequently exceed 40°C, air conditioning is a life-saver, not a luxury.
- AC Redundancy: Ask about backup power generators in case of summer outages.
- Indoor Exercise: Look for large, climate-controlled indoor play areas since outdoor walks are limited to early mornings or late nights.
3. Health and Hygiene Standards
"If a boarding house doesn't ask for your pet’s vaccination record, walk away. They are likely putting your pet at risk."
- Vaccination Policy: Mandatory checks for Rabies, DHPP, and Bordetella (dogs) or Feline Flu (cats).
- On-Call Vet: Check if they have a resident vet or a partnership with a 24/7 emergency clinic.
- The Sniff Test: A physical visit should reveal a clean-smelling, well-ventilated environment.
4. Daily Routine and Staff-to-Pet Ratio
Your pet thrives on routine. A quality facility should provide:
- Supervised Play: Dogs should be separated by size and temperament.
- Digital Updates: Look for facilities that offer daily photos, videos, or Live Webcam access.
- Staff Training: Inquire if handlers are trained in pet first aid and animal behavior.
